A damning new report confirms what everyone already knew. The "2026 New Mexico Health Outcomes & Investment Analysis," released July 22, 2026, rips the lid off. It exposes a system drowning in money but starved for results.
Billions Wasted, Lives Unchanged
New Mexico's Department of Health (DOH) and Human Services Department (HSD) are swimming in cash. They've seen an average 15% year-over-year budget increase since FY2022. For the current fiscal year, FY2027, they're set to blow an estimated $7.8 billion. Seven point eight billion dollars. What do we have to show for it? Nothing but statistics that shame us.
Our infant mortality rate sits at a tragic 6.1 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2023. The national average actually dropped. Our adult diabetes rate is 12.5%, far above the national 10.8%.
Only 38% of New Mexicans with mental illness get treatment. Is this what $7.8 billion buys us? This is a disgrace.
Governor Lujan Grisham’s office offers hollow platitudes, a masterclass in deflection. They released a statement acknowledging the report, then mumbled about the "long-term nature" of public health challenges. Dr. Maria Sanchez, Secretary of Health, echoed the same tired, insulting excuse.
"We are addressing deeply entrenched issues that require sustained effort," Sanchez stated. "Our investments are crucial for building infrastructure and providing services that were previously lacking."
Lacking? You've had billions. Where is the infrastructure? Where are the services?
The Money Pit: Where It Really Goes
Sarah Jenkins, Executive Director of New Mexico Health Watch, hit the nail on the head.

- Broken Programs: Many programs lack real metrics, operating in a vacuum of accountability. They're designed by bureaucrats in Santa Fe, not by the communities they're supposed to serve. Is it any wonder they consistently fail?
- Workforce Shortages: We still don't have enough doctors or nurses, especially outside city limits, despite billions flowing through the system. Throwing money at a symptom without addressing the root causes isn't fixing this fundamental problem; it's just delaying the inevitable collapse.

This isn't about improving health. It's about maintaining a sprawling, inefficient bureaucracy.
It's about securing federal matching funds and funneling state dollars through a system that benefits insiders. The DOH and HSD are black holes for taxpayer money.
They claim "progress" while New Mexicans get sicker. Their "strategies" are designed to look busy, not to be effective.
This report isn't a surprise. It's confirmation. Our state leadership is either willfully blind or actively complicit in a system that fails its most vulnerable. They're playing a shell game with our lives and our dollars.
Stop waiting for "long-term solutions." Stop believing the spin. Demand immediate, radical change.
Every single official responsible for this grotesque failure, from the Governor's office down, needs to be held accountable. No more excuses. No more billions without results.
