Charleston: Violence Is as Predictable as Rush Hour

Charleston's I-26 is a highway of horror, where violence is as predictable as rush hour. This article exposes the city's "endless loop of lies and lethargy.

I-26 Shooting: Charleston’s Endless Loop of Lies and Lethargy

Another Monday. Another shooting. Another victim bleeding on Interstate 26. The Charleston Police Department calls it an “active investigation.” We call it business as usual. WCBD News 2 breathlessly reports, “Man shot on I-26 early Monday morning, please say.” Please say what, exactly? That Charleston is a city where violence is as predictable as rush hour traffic? That law enforcement offers nothing but platitudes while our highways become shooting galleries?

The incident, which occurred around 1:30 AM on Monday, October 23, 2023, involved a male victim shot near Cosgrove Avenue. He was hospitalized, and his condition remains unknown. As of now, there are no suspects and no stated motive. This isn’t news; it’s a broken record.

The Public Isn’t Buying It Anymore

The public’s response? A collective shrug, thick with cynicism. On Reddit’s r/Charleston, users aren’t asking for justice; they’re cracking jokes about “another I-26 road rage special” or a “botched drug deal.” It’s a grim humor born from frustration.

WCBD News 2’s vague headline is rightly mocked. “Please say what? Prayers? Suspect description?” The outrage isn’t at the violence itself, but at the media’s transparent attempt to juice clicks without delivering facts. This isn’t reporting; it’s fearmongering for ad revenue. They’re recycling the same tired script.

Why the distrust? Because transparency is a foreign concept to Charleston officials. They offer no details, no real timelines, just a promise of “ongoing investigation.” It’s an insult to our intelligence.

Charleston’s Highway of Horror

I-26 isn’t just a commuter route. It’s a symbol. A symbol of Charleston’s decaying public safety. Daily traffic volume exceeds 100,000 vehicles. This isn’t some back alley. This is a major artery, now stained with blood. How can we expect tourists or new businesses to feel safe when our main highway is a crime scene?

The economic impact of I-26 closures is massive. Lost productivity. Wasted fuel. But who cares about the city’s bottom line when the Mayor’s office is too busy polishing its image? Mayor John Tecklenburg needs to answer for this. So does CPD Chief Chito. Their silence is deafening, and frankly, unacceptable.

The “Ongoing Investigation” Farce

CPD says they’re “working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.” What does that even mean? How many “active investigations” are gathering dust in their files? How many victims are waiting for answers that never come? This isn’t diligence; it’s deflection.

Where are the cameras? Where are the increased patrols? South Carolina taxpayers fund this department. We deserve more than vague press releases. We demand concrete action, not empty promises.

The cost of treating gunshot wounds is astronomical, often running into the tens of thousands of dollars per incident. Who pays for that? We do, the taxpayers. While the perpetrators vanish into thin air and the police “investigate,” we bear the financial burden and the emotional toll.

What Will It Take?

Will it take a public official getting shot on I-26 for real action to be taken? Will it take a tourist fleeing the city because they don’t feel safe on our roads? How many more lives must be shattered before Mayor Tecklenburg and Chief Chito admit they have a problem? The time for excuses is over.

This isn’t about one shooting. It’s about a pattern. A pattern of violence, incompetence, and public deception that is eroding the very fabric of our community. Charleston deserves better. Demand answers. Demand accountability. Or prepare for more Monday morning headlines, asking us to “please say” something we already know: our city is failing us. We won’t stay silent any longer.
