Police respond to reported shooting near Simplot on Tank Farm Road in Pocatello – KBOI

Pocatello residents are once again left reeling, not just from a shooting near the Simplot plant on Tank Farm Road, but from the Pocatello Police Department’s infuriatingly familiar response: a masterclass in obfuscation. One person shot, stable condition, no arrests, no suspects, no motive. This isn’t policing; it’s a cover-up in slow motion, and frankly, it’s unacceptable.

On April 2, 2026, at precisely 8:30 PM, 911 dispatchers were deluged with calls reporting gunfire near a major industrial employer. What did Pocatello PD do? They established a perimeter. They transported one victim to Portneuf Medical Center. Then, a deafening silence. Two days later, we still know nothing substantial. Absolutely nothing. Is this the standard we’ve come to expect from our protectors?

The Public Deserves Answers, Not Platitudes

Pocatello Police Spokesperson offered what can only be described as hollow comfort, a textbook example of bureaucratic speak:

“We can confirm that one individual was transported to Portneuf Medical Center with a gunshot wound and is in stable condition. Our detectives are working tirelessly, following all available leads. We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact us.”

“Working tirelessly”? “Following all available leads”? This is boilerplate. This is what you say when you have nothing. Or, more disturbingly, when you’re actively hiding something. Who is this victim? Why are they protecting this information? The public has a fundamental right to know if this was a targeted attack or random violence. Our safety depends on it.

Local resident Sarah Jenkins hit the nail on the head, articulating the widespread unease:

“It’s unsettling. You don’t expect something like this right here, especially so close to where people work. It makes you think twice about being out after dark.”

Unsettling is an understatement. It’s infuriating. The police’s stonewalling doesn’t just fuel fear; it actively undermines public trust. It tells us they value their own opaque processes over the peace of mind of the citizens they swore to protect.

Simplot’s Convenient Silence and Corporate Priorities

J.R. Simplot Company, ever the good corporate citizen, issued its own bland statement, devoid of any real substance:

“J.R. Simplot Company is fully cooperating with the Pocatello Police Department in their investigation. The safety of our employees and the community is our top priority.”

“Fully cooperating” doesn’t mean transparency. It means they’ll give just enough to avoid bad press and protect their bottom line. Simplot’s priority is profit, not public safety. This incident happened near their facility. What security measures were in place? What surveillance footage did they turn over? Will they be held accountable for any lapse that contributed to this incident? Don’t hold your breath. History tells us corporate giants rarely face the music without a fight.

This isn’t an isolated incident of police incompetence in Pocatello. Time and again, serious crimes are met with vague statements and prolonged investigations that yield little. The lack of arrests, the refusal to name the victim, the absence of any motive – it all points to a department either overwhelmed, under-resourced, or deliberately withholding information from the very people it serves.

  • April 2, 8:30 PM: Shooting reported.
  • April 3, Morning: Police confirm one victim, stable condition. No arrests.
  • April 4, Morning: Police still have no suspect, no motive.

Two days. Zero progress, publicly at least. Is this truly the best Pocatello can do? Is this the level of competence our tax dollars are funding?

Who benefits from this appalling lack of transparency? Not the citizens living in fear. Not the victim recovering in Portneuf Medical Center. It benefits those who wish to avoid scrutiny. It benefits a police department that prefers to manage optics rather than solve crimes. Pocatello taxpayers fund this department. They deserve more than empty assurances. They deserve action. They deserve answers. Until then, assume the worst. Assume this department is failing you, and demand better. Our community’s safety, and our trust, depend on it.
